Pandit Govindrao Tembe
1881–1955A pioneer who elevated the harmonium from a mere accompaniment instrument to a respected solo voice in Hindustani classical music. Tembe was among the first to demonstrate that the harmonium could express the nuances of ragas, earning it a place on the concert stage.
Pt. Purushottam Walawalkar
1921–1989A virtuoso harmonium soloist from Goa known for his lightning-fast taan patterns and precise intonation. Walawalkar performed extensively on All India Radio and trained a generation of harmonium players in the Gwalior gharana tradition.
Pt. Tulsidas Borkar
1934–2016One of the most recorded harmonium artists in history. Borkar accompanied legendary vocalists including Bhimsen Joshi, Jasraj, and Kumar Gandharva. His sensitive accompaniment style — always supporting, never overshadowing — set the standard for generations.
